Red Lion’s third-quarter confidence led to the field hockey team’s 3-1 win against Dallastown

Red Lion field hockey is riding a hot hand.

The Lions have won 11 straight and maintain a 12-1 record after defeating YAIAA rival Dallastown 3-1 on the the Wildcats’ home field. Dallastown, however, is struggling to organize itself in the first month of the 2023 Pennsylvania Fall field hockey season. The Wildcats are 2-10.

The most action Monday night was found in the third quarter. Three goals were scored – two for Red Lion and one for Dallastown. The Wildcats weren’t out of the game; they just couldn’t keep up with Red Lion’s attack.

It was Kaelyn Eaches’s and Layla Binko’s surge, who each landed their shots within three minutes of each other in the third that helped to continue Red Lion’s winning run. Before the Lions bumped up their pace, Dallastown had evened the score at 1-1.

The Wildcats shutdown Red Lion’s offense, thwarting them from finding first-half momentum. It wasn’t until the final minutes of the second quarter that the Lions’ Julia Turosinski found the backboard on a corner play.

Hailey Johnson was first to take a shot, which was blocked by Dallastown’s goalie Teaghen Rieder. She was able to find the rebound and gave Red Lion a temporary 1-0 edge.

At 1-0, Dallastown pressed for the equalizer. With just under five minutes played in the third, following a broken up corner, Ella Zorbaugh scored. She was assisted by Danielle Kapsak.

The Wildcats were able to stave off Red Lion’s momentum late in the game. Neither team was able to capitalize on shots in the fourth, which ended favorably for the Lions.

Dallastown has time to try to prepare for the next matchup, as Monday’s matchup was the first contest between the two PIAA District 3 Class 3A teams. The teams were supposed to play at Red Lion earlier this month but the game was rescheduled due to weather conditions.
