Penn Manor wins 2-1 in battle against Manheim Central to remain undefeated

Penn Manor battled Lancaster-Lebanon League nemesis Manheim Central field hockey Monday in a fiery back-and-forth.

The Comets came away with the narrow 2-1 win. They remain undefeated, while the Barons lost their first game of the season. Penn Manor is 4-0. Manheim Central is 4-1-1.

Both teams displayed intense speed, big hits, and quick interceptions. Action was seen in both attack 25s.

Chloe Hook tallied the first Comet goal off a corner less than 5 minutes into the first quarter. Her twin sister, Morgan Hook, had the assist, but it didn’t take long for the Barons to answer back.

Sixteen seconds after Hook’s goal, Ella Brubaker got her own shot off past Comet goalkeeper Adeline Arkhurst.

Penn Manor had a chance to extend their lead with just under 3 minutes left in the first quarter when a stroke was called. However, the Baron’s goalie, Laci Nelson, blocked the low left shot from Comet captain Avery Bradburn to keep the game even.

Arkurst faced three total shots and made two saves while Nelson faced 12 shots and made 10 saves.

The score remained 1-1 until the second quarter when Tristan Groff fired in a shot from the top of the circle on another Penn Manor corner.

The ball found the stick of Grace Gerner for the tip and gave the Comets a one-goal lead that carried until the final buzzer sounded.

Both teams were green-carded for overly physical play. The Comets were carded with 2:41 left in the second quarter, and the Barons played down with 6:33 left in the third quarter.
