USA Field Hockey names U-16, U-18 women’s national teams

USA Field Hockey hosted a selection camp the weekend of February 4 to determine its U-16 and U-18 women’s national teams.

The three day-training was held in Davidson, North Carolina.

“It is always nice to see the amount of talent we have across the country in this age group and therefore we had some tough decision to make,” U-16 USWNT head coach Tamara Durante told USA Field Hockey. “We are excited about the players we’ve selected to the U-16 Squad, and we look forward to our March camp and the opportunity to work with these young ladies in preparation for our foreign tour.”

There were 28 athletes named to the 2023 U-16 roster. Three of the 11 who were renamed to the roster are familiar names in Pennsylvania high school field hockey – Abigail Gerdeman (Chester Springs), Morgan O’Donnell (Lincoln University) and Shae Wozniak (Wayne).

“The training camp provided a highly competitive environment that challenged each individual,” U-18 USWNT head coach Ralph Boersma told USA Field Hockey. “We continued to build on our core team principles within ‘The USA Way’ and are looking forward to take the next steps in this process at the March camp. The goal is to prepare the group for international competition later on without losing sight of each individual’s growth.”

Half of the U-18 roster were on it last year, and seven of the athletes made the jump from the U-16 squad.

The next training camp for both squads will take place from March 10 to 12, where the international traveling rosters will be decided. The camp will take place at Queens University of Charlotte, in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to USA Field Hockey.

The U-16 team will travel to France in the beginning of April to play in a Four Nations Tournament, while the U-18 team will travel to Belgium for matches.
