Red Lion continues strong momentum with a 4-1 home win over New Oxford

Red Lion field hockey is rising up.

The Lions’ latest win against New Oxford boosted their record to 7-1 and maintained their sixth-place slot in the District 3 Class AAA standings and first in Division I of the YAIAA conference. New Oxford, now 1-2-1, dropped from 16 to 19 in the District 3 Class AA ranks and sits in YAIAA Division I’s fourth spot.

In the first quarter, Red Lion got to work with a strong offensive presence right out of the gate. Jenna Hodgkinson scored first for the Lions. A popped-up ball came toward the cage, and Hodgkinson got a touch on it to put her team ahead just over 2 minutes in.

Hailey Johnson also added a goal in the first with a hard drive on a corner. It slammed the backboard and gave the Lions a 2-0 edge.

The second began with New Oxford possessing the ball in their offensive 25. The result of the Colonials’ attack was a goal by Sydney Winpigler after lots of action around the cage.

New Oxford drew four back-to-back corners but was unable to capitalize. With 8:49 on the clock, the Colonials earned a penalty stroke.

With the potential to tie the game, Winpigler stepped up to take it. But she was unable to get the low left shot past the Lions’ goalie Mackenzie Schrack.

Red Lion also had four back-to-back corners later in the second, but the Lions also struggled to find the cage. The 2-1 score remained close until the third quarter.

That was when a hard shot from Kaelyn Eaches squeezed past Colonials’ goalie Zeddie Brown and gave the Lions a 3-1 lead. Olivia Thompson added one more Red Lion goal in the fourth to cap the night’s scoring.
