NFHCA: Swarthmore joins nationally ranked teams in sizzling style, snapping Johns Hopkins 47-game Centennial Conference regular season win streak

The Swarthmore field hockey team must is snapping their fingers to their own beat.

They broke No. 5 Johns Hopkins’ 47-game Centennial Conference regular season win streak over the weekend, which was “the longest regular season win streak in conference history,” according to Swarthmore Athletics.

Swarthmore is ranked No. 24 in week eight of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll.

It was Swarthmore’s fourth overtime game of the 2024 Fall regular season. The Garnet have pulled out the dub against Rowan, No. 22 Stevens Institute of Technology, and Gettysburg College.

The final score against the Blue Jays was 1-0.

While stats don’t tell the game story, they give insight into how tough the competition was. Swarthmore outperformed Johns Hopkins throughout the 60-minutes of regulation.

Swarthmore had eight shots and JHU had five. Swarthmore had five penalty corners, and JHU had one.

It was Sarah Cooper’s fourth goal of the season, a penalty stroke, that lifted the Garnet to the victory. Swarthmore plays against Washington College (MD) today.

According to the NFHCA, “the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll is a composite ranking of the top 20 teams with a .500 or better record in the nation each week. Each Division III team with an NFHCA member coach is permitted one vote for the ranking each week.

“Polls are announced every Tuesday during the field hockey playing season.

The Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll is voted on by NFHCA member coaches and has no bearing on selection to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.”

The following teams received the most votes cast by NFHCA members. The list is the team rank, name, record, and last position in last week’s poll. Bolded teams have moved position higher or lower from week to week.
