NFHCA: Few changes in week eight of Division I coaches poll, Northwestern stays at No. 1, Iowa upsets OSU

When you’re having a great season, everyone is out to get you.

The Ohio State bumped down one spot to No. 4 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. Over the weekend, No. 16 Iowa was able to upset the energic Buckeyes 3-0.

It must have been the pressure of not clinching a Big 10 tournament spot. With the win, the Hawkeyes narrowly made it into the tournament. Seven teams will play at Maryland in November for the outright title.

The No. 1 ranked Northwestern Wildcats continue to showcase their top-tiered staying power. The Wildcats went into overtime against Michigan on the road.

Maddie Zimmer, a red shirt senior and Olympian, cut through traffic into Northwestern’s attack 23 where she dumped the ball in front of the cage and two ‘Cats were hanging out near post.

Ashley Sessa, a red shirt transfer and Olympian, took a shot, and right next to her was Lauren Wadas, who collected the rebound off the pads of Michigan’s Hala Silverstein.

Wadas slammed the ball into the cage for the 2-1 win.

According to the NFHCA, “the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll is a composite ranking of the top 20 teams with a .500 or better record in the nation each week. Each Division I team with an NFHCA member coach is permitted one vote for the ranking each week.

“Polls are announced every Tuesday during the field hockey playing season.

The Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll is voted on by NFHCA member coaches and has no bearing on selection to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship.”

The following teams received the most votes cast by NFHCA members. The list is the rank, team name, record, and last position held in the prior poll.
