The University of Connecticut narrowly captured the 2024 Big East Field Hockey Conference trophy over the weekend.
UConn and Temple battled in the final contest on Sunday. The Huskies prevailed in the third quarter when they earned a penalty stroke.
The attack penalty corner crew capitalized on a defensive error. Julia Bressler stepped up to take her shot and be the hero.
The Huskies were named the No. 3 overall seed entering the NCAA Division I tournament. They will host the first two rounds.
The University of Massachusetts, Harvard, and Syracuse will play in Storrs for the opening rounds.
The first round will feature UConn versus UMass. And, Harvard versus Syracuse.
How they got there:
UConn defeated Liberty University on Friday. The Huskies won 2-1. Dara Semmartin scored first for the Flames using a drag flick. And, then Juana Garcia deflected a goal off Temple’s keeper and quickly followed that up with a one-timed shot from the right side into cage for the win.
Season highlights:
- UConn ends its season 17-3.
- The Huskies were 9-1 at home.
- The last time UConn was in the Big East championship was in 2021.
- UConn beat four ranked teams throughout the 2024 Fall regular season.
Temple played Old Dominion. The Owls won 2-1. Sian Emslie put ODU on the board first, scoring off a penalty corner and loose ball. Lina Neilson tied the game at one apiece off a penalty corner. The game went into double overtime. Agustina Tucceri scored the game-winner, when she redirected the ball into the cage.
Season highlights:
- Temple ends the season with 12 wins, giving them double digit wins in three consecutive years for the first time since 2012-14.
- The team also went 9-0 at home, its first undefeated season on campus since 1981.
- TU advanced to the Big East championship game for the first time since 2015.
- The Cherry and White defeated four ranked teams during the course of the season.
